James M. Trotter was named Recorder of Deeds by President Grover Cleveland on this date in 1887.

The Renaissance, the first black pro basketball team, became the first black team on record to win a professional world's championship on this date in 1939.

William Christopher Handy, "Father of the Blues," died in New York City on this date in 1958. Handy is best-known for the "Memphis Blues," the first recorded blues song (1912), and the "St. Louis Blues."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led 6,000 protesters in support of striking sanitation workers, through downtown Memphis, TN, on this date in 1968. One person died and 50 people were injured when disorder erupted as they were attacked by mobs and police.

Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, civil rights leader, minister, and President of Morehouse College, died in Atlanta, GA, on this date in 1984.

Carolyn Peck, became the first black woman to win a women's NCAA basketball final as she coached her Purdue Boilermakers to a 62-45 victory over the Duke Blue Devils on this date in 1999. Peck accomplished this feat after only two years as head coach.

Tennis sensations, Venus and Serena Williams met in the finals of the Lipton Championship in Key Biscayne, FL, on this date in 1999. This was the first time in WTA history that sisters advanced to a championship final and faced each other. Venus won the match 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
